Not my favourite and we don’t usually buy it as the taste is quite different and we don’t necessarily like it

Vegemite is a thick, dark, pasty spread with a dense, gluey texture that clings well to toast without dripping or running. Its flavour is intensely savoury and very salty, with strong umami notes and a slight bitterness, so a thin scrape is definitely better than a thick layer. When used lightly on well‑buttered toast or in a sandwich, it adds a rich, satisfying depth that’s quite addictive once you acquire the taste. The aroma is distinctly yeasty and malty, which fits the flavour but can be a bit strong if you’re not used to yeast spreads. The iconic yellow-and-red jar is sturdy, easy to store and recognise on the shelf, and the screw-top lid keeps the spread fresh for a long time. It’s not the cheapest pantry item, but the jar lasts ages because you only need a small amount each time, so it still feels like good value.

Vegemite is a bold, salty, and umami-rich yeast extract spread that many Australians swear by. It’s low in calories but packed with B‑vitamins like B1, B2, B3 and folate. Its flavour is very intense — more like a savory broth than a sweet spread — and it’s best used sparingly on buttered toast. The high sodium content can be a concern.
